Teaching Philosophy
My teaching centers on helping students cultivate their sociological imagination by connecting their lived experiences to larger social forces. I strive to create inclusive, supportive classrooms that demystify academic content, especially for first-generation and non-traditional students. My goal is to build students’ confidence, support their agency, and foster a genuine sense of belonging and purpose in learning. I believe that when students see their stories reflected in the curriculum, they become empowered to think critically and transform the world around them.

“Maria made the course easy considering it’s such an intense subject for a summer term. Any issues I had very on my end and not from her” (SOC 404 Statistical Methods)
“Instructor Hermosillo provides a very welcoming environment in the classroom and creates a very safe space for students to speak on subjects… She’s a very kind and understanding teacher and I would definitely recommend her to anyone wanting to take Sociology!” (SOC 101 Principles of Sociology)
“She is super clear in what she expects and her grading and makes sure we all leave the week knowing something a little bit more. She’s very patient, kind, and understanding, and approaches these difficult topics with concern, caution, and empathy.” (SOC 441 Social Inequalities)
